Portraits inspired by Dennis Morris
I was lucky enough to see Dennis Morris’s work at The Photographers Gallery in London last year.
Morris started taking photographs at an early age and had set up a studio in his home at the age of 11. He was catupulted to fame by taking a picture of a young Bob Marley coming out of a gig and was invited by Marley to accompany him on tour.
This opened up the world of Reggae to Morris who went on to photograph every major reggae artist and then later onto the Punk scene to shoot groups like The Sex Pistols. Morris manages to capture the cracks and vulnerabilities of these artists that they hide from their public personas. He uses harsh lighting and close up framing to make the photos feel confrontational but also personal at the same time.
I wanted to show a bit of personality from my model in the images.
